The cabinets combine the traditional feel of cherry wood cabinetry with contemporary lacquer shelving and streamlined metal hardware.
Host Joan Kohn visits the remodeled kitchen of Gary Novick, who bought an inexpensive , dilapidated house and created a dramatic, sculptured living space by knocking down walls and creating two-story spaces where there were none before. His concept for the kitchen was a visually arresting room that was practical but not used a lot. He did this by using a variety of materials: wood, metal, stone, lacquer and glass.
  • The focal point of the room is an unusual, cracked glass island connected to a dark granite counter. Glass is used in interesting ways throughout the kitchen . A sand-blasted glass door hides the pantry, and a glass transom above the exterior door is etched with a sun and stars.
  • The kitchen floor is blue pearl granite. Its curved perimeter defines the kitchen space from the other rooms, which have wood flooring.
  • The cabinets are traditional cherry wood. To give them a more contemporary feel , they are paired with black lacquer shelving. Hardware is sleek aluminum.
  • A German cable system, with the transformer and other parts are encased in glass , gives the lighting an industrial feel.
