The kitchen, dining and living areas are completely open to each other. Each space is distinguished by its own coffered ceiling.

A raised hearth at the end of a run of cabinets is an unusual feature. Around the corner from the fireplace is an antique sedan chair used as a working piece of art.

The dining area is flooded with the light from the patio doors that overlook a natural preserve.

Host Joan Kohn visits Carol and David Webster, empty nesters who used the help of their architect son, Chip Webster, to build an elegant home especially suited for entertaining. The kitchen, dining and living rooms fill one large space, but each space is well defined by three coffered ceilings.

  • The large L-shaped kitchen uses no upper cabinetry, to avoid too "kitchen-y" a look in the open floor plan. Ample storage space is available not only in the base cabinets, but in the large walk-in pantry.
  • The focal point of the kitchen is the large island, topped with an oversized slab of granite. The island provides work space and extra seating. A built-in cavity on the surface can be used for wine or flowers.
  • Three sinks, two wall ovens and two warming drawers, a large refrigerator and refrigerator drawers make it easy for several cooks to work in the kitchen at once .
  • Corner windows at counter height fill the space with natural light.
  • The cabinets are white, with a raised panel and porcelain knobs; flooring is pickled white pine, and counters are dark granite. The look is traditional, streamlined and elegant.
