Interior designer Denise Simons shows how to create a wall hanging with a poster and framed canvas.
Materials:
framed canvas
latex paint (3 parts paint to 1 part water mix)
sponge brush
any paper product (poster, wrapping paper, postcards, etc.)
decoupage medium
paint pens
embellishments
Steps:
- Determine the size of the canvas by judging against the poster or wrapping paper used. It's up to you, but be sure there is enough room for a border.
- Paint a border along each side of the canvas, covering the material well. Wipe a dampened cloth across the color to give it a streaked, older look (figure A) .
- To add a plaid look (figure B), go back over the paint in an opposing direction, but this time don't wipe with a cloth. The borders should extend in around two to four inches with white space in the center for the paper product. (There is no need to be precise here because the paper will extend over the paint edge and center the piece).
- Lavish decoupage medium across the white space and into the border (it will dry clear). Place the paper product in the center (figure C) and press flat, working outward. There will be bubbles, but this will add to the overall texture.
- Brush more decoupage medium on top of the paper as well as on the border (figure D). Covering the entire piece will--when dry--add a textured flair that gives the piece a handpainted feel.
- Use paint pens to embellish the piece once it dries. Bring aspects of the paper product out onto the border, such as drawing similar flowers (figure E).
- Other embellishments can be decoupaged onto the surface. Add feathers or other materials so that the piece literally extends off the canvas.
