Molding Overview

Fix It Up! : Episode FIX-202 -- More Projects »
Before you visit the store to buy your molding, do your homework! Check out some magazines or photos to get an idea of what you want your room to look like.

When buying the molding, be sure to get enough extra length to make up for any mistakes you might make in cutting. Even professional installers sometimes get as much as 8 feet extra.

Two types of saws can be used. The most basic is the miter box, which is used for making angled cuts. If you use a miter saw for this project, you'll also need a coping saw to shape the molding so it fits snugly.

If you want to save yourself a great deal of work, you could use an electric sliding compound miter saw (available at most equipment rental companies). This saw is capable of cutting two angles at once, eliminating the need for a coping saw.

  • Be sure to cut your molding in an area that's easy to clean up.
  • Always wear safety goggles when using power tools.
