Figure B
Cathy Whitlock gives tips for making a decorative statement in your entry hall, which sets the tone for the rest of the house. Plants, accessories and color are an easy way to transform the space.

Traditional

  • Ficus trees are very classic and look good flanking a doorway. They need light , so if your entryway doesn't get a lot, think about a dieffenbachia, Chinese evergreen or a silk tree.
  • Oriental carpets are the number one kind put in entrance halls. They look beautiful , wear well and tend to hide dirt.
  • Use one main piece of furniture like a chest to anchor the area (figure A). Display a favorite collection and/or lamps on it. Hang a picture or mirror above to check yourself before leaving or if guests arrive.
  • Yellow goes with everything so it's a good choice for the entry, which flows into so many other rooms in the home.

Contemporary

  • Palm trees are very contemporary and add nice height.
  • Place a chair at the front door as a catchall for bags, jackets, keys, etc. when you first walk through the door.
  • A console table is very functional plus its long and narrow shape fills the space (figure B). Simple baskets and a fern help to fill the open area under it . Choose accessories carefully as they determine the style of your entry hall.
  • Use molding to draw eyes up and make the space seem larger.
  • A sisal carpet works well for a contemporary look.
