Designer Leslie Corzine discusses with Kitty Bartholomew the design elements in her cozy, comfortable home, and shares how she arranged a few of her spaces according to feng shui principles.
Beadboard, new shelving units and white paint cover what was once a dark green wall. The limestone fireplace was covered with brick for a cohesive look.
The same grass cloth wallpaper used on the adjoining hallway walls is also found on the dining room ceiling.
"In the feng shui philosophy, it says that the stove is the center of energy in the house," says Corzine. "A mirror placed over a stove is said to amplify the energy system of your entire life."
Corzine says to not be afraid to use different materials in the kitchen--hers combines marble countertops, a brick tile backsplash and painted beadboard.
Corzine says, "Wainscoting can be varied in size from 36 inches, which is very traditional, to 42 inches, which has become a standard." In her bedroom, she secured the wainscoting 60 inches from the floor.
According to feng shui, a plant placed in front of a fireplace will keep the energy of the house inside instead of letting it escape up the chimney.
In the bathroom, towels hanging from chrome hooks act as a decorative element in the small space.
Her daughter's bedroom walls feature easy-to-make fabric artwork. Simply stretch a 1/4 yard of fabric around a board and secure with staples.
