After: Modern Art Deco
This design is all about warmth and that opulent deco feel. Rich wood tones, emphasis on the horizontal line with long, rounded shapes and mirrored elements create a classic art deco dining room. Designer David Bromstad blends the mirrors into the room with a black wood overlay design characteristic of the era. A mirrored sideboard repeats the mirrored wall feature in the room. If you're hesitant about pairing brown and black, remember: brown and black go with everything, including each other.

The darker wall color automatically gives the room a formal feel. The wood paneling looks like the traditional expensive woods used during the deco period, but Bromstad uses an inexpensive option. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panels are cut to follow the line of the ceiling beams onto the wall. The wall is painted a deep red in the gap between the nutmeg panels for a shadow effect that emphasizes the geometry in the room. Paint contractor Danielle Hirsch uses a thinned glaze to create a strie finish over the painted panels. A dry brush creates streaking that resembles the texture and depth of wood grain.
