Design Project: Antiqued Mirror
A store-bought mirror is embellished and aged to give it a rustic, antique look. To start, the mirror is removed from the frame. Using wood glue and brad nails, various pieces of moldings are attached to the frame. The molding is lightly scuffed with sandpaper and then a couple coats of paint are applied. When dry, the edges of the frame are sanded to reveal paint layers and the wood frame below. With the mirror lying face down, an environmentally friendly stripping solution is brushed on. When the mirror’s silver coating begins to lift off to the desired effect, the excess stripping solution is wiped off with water to deactivate the process. Next, antiquing solution is applied with a spray bottle, rag or a combination of both techniques. If too much of the silver coating is removed, the back of the mirror can be painted black to create a solid background. After the mirror dries, it is placed back inside the frame.
