Before: Not Conducive for Dinner Parties
Kate Shaw dreams of someday owning her own restaurant — but, in the meantime, she would happily settle for a new dining room. This chef loves to entertain, but the dining room (pictured, right) in her 1897 condo isn’t set up for elegant dinner parties. The table is wobbly and only seats four. There is no place to put serving dishes and the décor is rather bland. Shaw would love to have a sophisticated yet practical dining room where she can show off her culinary creations in style.

After: Elegant Drama
With the help of host Joan Steffend, carpenter Jeff Meyer, and less than $500, designer Joe Segovia create a hip and sophisticated dining room that is ready for some elegant entertaining.

The makeover starts by dividing the walls into thirds. The top two-thirds are painted green and the bottom third is painted black. White chair molding separates the graphic punch of lime green from the grounding, deep black.

Paint $42 and molding $45
