Make a Small Space Stand Out
Concerned about making that small room look larger? Ignore what might be said about painting a small room in a light shade. Phillip Jude Miller, founder and principal of America Dural, a design firm in Cambridge, Mass., believes in playing up a space's negative feature, thus, turning it into a positive. Black works well for that.

"Black is a great saturation for a small room, an entryway or tight hall," he says. It makes the wood grains pop out, the details come to life, and his clients love it.

And, in actuality, dark rooms feel larger because the room lines disappear, says Klick.

Bridget Dobson of Bridget Dobson Studios in Atlanta, Ga., painted the entry to her New York apartment in black lacquer. She says it shines like patent leather. She then hung a few brightly-lit impressionistic paintings on the wall, and wound up with a look she swears is "stunning."
