Seeing Orange

Smart Design : Episode SDN-310 -- More Projects »
Eric Lysdahl gives tips on how to use orange for a modern look and explains how easy it can mix with other colors. Subtle and sultry or fresh and vibrant, see why this cool color is heating up home design:

  • Lysdahl doesn't think of orange as a difficult color to use, it's just that people aren't used to using it. Orange has a lot of strength, so he suggests using it sparingly if you tend to be a little afraid of color.

  • The use of orange depends on the context of the room. If it's a very contemporary space, mix orange with lime green or cobalt blue for a lot of contrast. If the room is traditional, mix it with shades of brown, tan and gold since these colors are going to mute it.

Eric Lysdahl's home is full of shades of orange, which beautifully mix with all the other colors in his home.

If you're afraid of color, use touches of orange in throw pillows, small upholstered chairs and tabletop items such as place mats, napkins, flowers and fruit.

This bland kitchen is a room homeowner Aaron Oster has been avoiding for three years. He likes to entertain, but really dislikes being in the boring space.

Taking inspiration from a favorite picture, Duncan Busser infused the entire kitchen with orange from the walls to the small appliances to the fruit for a vibrant and exciting room. Since this color makes people hungry, it's a great choice.
