Murals painted on wall panels bring a sense of space to a windowless living room.
The Fifties saw the unprecedented building of standardized ranch houses in the San Fernando Valley of California. Kitty Bartholomew visits designer Kurt Cyr to gather decorating ideas for camouflaging some of the shortcomings of this style of housing.

Cyr used a sun-drenched Mediterranean color palette of ocher, greens and earth tones in his ranch home. Since the living room had no windows, he painted outdoor scenes on wall panels around the room, finishing the bottom of the wall in faux marble . He also added a painted surround to the fireplace. When he ripped out the dated brown shag carpeting, he found floors in poor shape, so he covered them with a combed faux technique in dark brown. In the kitchen, he transformed plain white cabinets with a faux bird's eye maple finish and added a vintage linoleum floor. The color -washed walls received four separate coats of paint.
