Kid’s Room Project: Butterflies
Previous: Garden Mirror
Add a whimsical soft touch to your child’s room with foam-core butterfly forms winged in theater gels.

Materials
black foam core boards
dowel rod – cut in half lengthwise
theater gels
black paint
spray glue
straight blade
paintbrushes
pencil
wood glue
clamps

Steps
1. When purchasing the dowel rod for the butterfly’s thorax, have the hardware store cut the rod down the middle, creating two halves, each with a flat edge.
2. With a pencil, draw the shape of one butterfly wing on a foam core board. Then freehand some vein patterns within the wing.
3. With the straight blade cutter, gently cut out the wing and the negative space between the veins.
4. To create the second wing, lay already-cut wing atop another foam core board then trace and cut the outlines.
5. Spray the glue along one side of the wings.
6. Adhere a piece of theater gel on the wings so it covers the holes.
7. With the straight blade, gently score the gel along the edges of the wing to carefully trim off the excess. Allow the wings to dry.
8. Cut the dowel rod halves to the same length, just slightly longer than the narrow part of the wings.
9. Paint the dowel rod halves black to match the wings. Allow the rods to dry.
10. Place the each wing against the flat half of one dowel rod half to estimate where the wing will connect. Glue each wing to that position.
11. Glue the top half of the dowel rod onto the other half. Clamp them together and allow them to dry.
12. Hang your beautiful butterfly from the ceiling of your child’s room.
