Nature Lover's Bedroom

A small bedroom and barren sun porch are transformed into a eco-friendly space.

Before: Hot Pink
Seven-year-old Declan Sofield dislikes his bedroom (pictured, right). It is very small and the hot-pink color is too girly for him. But, his bedroom does have one thing most young boys don’t have, a private sun porch. The second-story porch is barren and gets too hot to play; Declan wishes he could have outdoor air conditioning for it. He loves hiking, gardening and rock collecting, so he’d also like his space to reflect his love of nature.

After: Four-Season Room
Next: Shady Porch
Declan’s room is no longer girly and his sun porch is no longer barren. Designer Drew Seskunas and carpenter Matt Cosgrove brought the outdoors in and the indoors out. The total cost of the project was less than $1,300. The hot pink walls have been replaced with sky blue walls and a forest of trees. The trees are all painted different to represent each season. A wood-graining tool is used to paint the tree trunks then leaves are stenciled onto each tree.
