A Castle for Two

A boring playroom is transformed into a fairy tale castle.

Kidspace : Episode HKID-205 -- More Projects »

Before: Old Dining Room
The Pond family lives in a 100-year-old kit house. The historic house is very quaint –– and very small. Because space is at a premium, big brother Aiden and his little sister Lily use the dining room as their playroom (pictured, right). The kids want a new playroom that looks more like a medieval fort and less like an old dining room. On their wish list, the kids ask for a castle, dressing room, stage, drawbridge and a wizard’s chest.

After: Fairy Tale Come True
Next: Center Stage
The dining room has been transformed to a time of lords, ladies and fairy tales. Like a fairy godmother, Kidspace designer Chelsea Norton grants the kid's wishes. Lily got a dressing room for all her costumes and a stage in which to wear them. Aiden got his castle and drawbridge in the form of a loft with trap door, a climbing rope and turrets. And, a wizard’s chest is full of tricks and toys is tucked away on the shelf.

After the walls are painted a regal shade of purple, gray bricks are stenciled on to make the fortress walls. Words to live by, written in Spanish make a noble wall border. The border is created on the computer using a gothic-style font. It is printed on self-adhesive label paper; each letter is cut out using a razor knife then carefully adhered to the wall. The existing chandelier is spray painted dark bronze to give it an old patina worthy of the castle setting.
