Dramatic Boys' Bedroom

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1608 -- More Projects »
Billy and Kevin are two brothers who share a bedroom. Billy is 10 and Kevin is 13, so they are ready for a more grownup space for hanging out. They want darker, more masculine colors and individual spaces that reflect their specific tastes.

Before: This bedroom was bland and too childish.

After: The boys' room now has bold color and individual accents.
The Dilemma
The boys' bedding is stuck in elementary school, but they are growing up fast. Both are into sports, and they each need a spot to proudly showcase their many trophies. They also need individual workspaces, and they'd like a richer color scheme to give the space a more grownup feel.

The Solution
The Design on a Dime team signs on to give these brothers a major-league room on a minor-league budget. Medium-blue walls and red accents will give the space a shot of color while maintaining a classic look. A bookcase between the two beds will define individual spaces and provide a spot to display trophies as well as new living quarters for their fish. A creative coat rack solution will give each of the boys a spot to hang his hat. Here's how the team brings it all together.

Figure A
Design coordinator Kelly Edwards designs a homework desk (figure A) that provides each of the brothers with his own spot to study. The divider has a shelf for storing their books and supplies.

Figure B

Interior designer Brice Cooper and design coordinator Ali Azhar put their heads together to create individual hat racks (figure B) to hang over each bed. The racks are designed to look like a coat of arms and have different themes to reflect each boy's favorite sports.
Ali adds crown molding (figure C) to the upper perimeter of the space, and simple red draperies (figure D) give the room classic detail that Mom and Dad will definitely appreciate.

Figure E

Kelly sews custom bedding (figure E) for the boys. She gives the duvets a side of red as well as a side of blue so the boys can switch up the look however they like.
Brice builds a custom bookcase (figure F) for displaying trophies that doubles as a divider to give the boys their own space. He mounts lighting sconces (figure G) on either side of the bookcase to give the boys a light to read by while lying in their beds.
