Sewing expert Pam Hastings shows Kitty Bartholomew how to cover an inexpensive storage unit with fabric, creating extra storage space perfect for a nursery or child's room. It consists of squares of fabric, lined and sewn together. The panels can be rolled up and secured with tabs.

Steps:

  1. Measure the dimensions of the unit to be covered, getting the height, width, and depth. Add 1/2" all around for seam allowance. You will have measurements for a top, two sides, the front and back. Cut fabric to measurements. Cut one set for outer fabric, one set for the lining.
  2. Make the lining first and make sure it fits over the unit properly, making adjustments as necessary for the outer fabric.
  3. For the lining: stitch the two side panels to the back panel. Trim both seams.
  4. Stitch the top to the three panels, being sure to make a clean, 90-degree turn with the needle at each corner.
  5. Repeat sequence for the outside fabric.
  6. Place the outside fabric over the lining (figure A), wrong sides together if you are using a serger, and sew each edge; right sides together if you are using a standard sewing machine--just sew edges and turn right side out.
  7. Sew the outside front panel to the liner front panel to make the flap.
  8. Attach a tab to the bottom of the flap (a small strip of liner and outside fabric sewn together)
  9. Attach the flap to the top panel: fold under the raw edges of the top panel ( figure B), insert the edge of the flap and topstitch close to the edge. Make sure the tab is facing down towards the bottom so it doesn't get caught in the stitching.
  10. Set the cover over the frame.
  11. Roll up flap and secure in place with tab and a button or Velcro on top.
