'70s-Inspired Bedroom

A bland bedroom becomes funky, fun and completely redone with '70s-inspired style.

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1801 -- More Projects »
At first glance, Jackie Estrada's one-bedroom apartment has all the trappings of a typical student dwelling — cluttered with books and computer equipment. But a closer look reveals furniture and decor from the 1970s, a fun period with vibrant colors and wild patterns. Even though this Gen-Y young lady hadn't been born at that time, she's a '70s flower child deep down and loves the freewheeling style and colors of the era. The Design on a Dime team sends her bedroom back in time with a funky makeover for less than $1,000.

Before: Retro but Bland
The Dilemma
Estrada's retro furniture includes a yellow armoire and a salmon-colored nightstand with mushrooms painted on the drawers. The colors in the room, though, are pale and washed out, not the vibrant and fabulous hues typical of the era. The ironing board, laundry hampers and missing closet door don't add much to the decor either.
