Family/Guest Room
Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-2612 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Steffend and designer Todd Pinzuti add an urban beach look to a dual-purpose room for less than $500.
Wall Paint $57
The makeover starts with painting the walls a creamy color that resembles cake batter. To make the room appear longer, wide horizontal stripes in a shade of Caribbean blue are painted around the room. The combination of the soft cream and the cool blue give the room a contemporary beachy feel.
Daybed $115
The homeowner's queen-size bed is repurposed into a daybed/lounge. The inspiration for the room's design comes from the blue awning-striped fabric used in the tailored bedskirt and in the bolster pillows.
- fabric: SR Harris Fabric Outlet

Game Table $32
A rolling game table and bookshelf is built to go at the foot of the daybed. A checkerboard pattern is painted on the top with the same cream and blue colors on the walls. Wheels are fastened to the bottom of the table to make it portable.
Lighting $25
The plain ceiling fan gets replaced with a simple, contemporary white, glass-ball fixture.
- pendant light: Ikea - 10937 FADO
Chaises $160
Two rattan chaises purchased at a home store work perfectly with the island beach theme.
- lounge chairs: Ikea - 10048313 Karlsund
Side Table $14
A white side table is placed between the chaises. The table base was found in the garbage. After the base got cleaned up, little wooden craft balls are glued onto the top. The entire piece is given a fresh coat of white paint. When dry, a new round glass tabletop is placed atop the wooden balls.
Wall Art $45
Reflective wall art is created by fastening little square blocks of wood to a large white board. Round mirrors are adhered to each square block with adhesive strips.
Valances $36
In keeping with the beach theme, valances are made using hula skirts. The skirts are hot glued onto a curtain rod and then hung over the window blinds.
Accessories $23
Total = $507
