Elegant Master Bedroom Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1307 -- More Projects »
Colleen Speer and Gerald Saavedra have lived in their home for over a year, but their master bedroom still lacks a style direction. Interior designer Kristan Cunningham, along with design coordinators Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson, comes up with a plan to give them a suite retreat for less than $1,000.
Colleen and Gerald have a spacious master bedroom with a beautiful fireplace, but they don't know how to fill the space. Mismatched furniture and blank walls leave the room feeling drab. They have one lamp for bedside reading but no nightstands. The fireplace doesn't have any defining features, and the windows lack stylish draperies.
A soothing blue color will tie the bedroom to the already-remodeled master bath, which has lots of custom tile work in various shades of blue. The bed will be repositioned so that it is opposite the fireplace. Custom silk draperies behind the bed will define it as a focal point in the room while camouflaging the closet doors and creating a dressing area for the couple. Matching furniture and a headboard for the bed will give the space function and definitive style. Here's how the team gets it done.
Heather finds just what she needs to furnish the room at a hotel-furnishings reseller. Two of each, dressers (figure A) and nightstands, along with a new headboard will give the room symmetry, while a fresh coat of paint will give the pieces a renewed sense of style.
Heather fashions an artistic effect on the walls by creating a frame for new wall art. She tapes off a square area, and once the coat of blue paint is dry, she removes the tape to reveal the crisp white lines that form the edges of the box. She then creates the wall art (figure B) by stamping a simple design on decorative paper and framing the finished piece.
Design coordinator Dave Sheinkopf builds a custom mirror (figure C) for the fireplace, using baseboard molding for its frame. On each side he installs a small shelf that will hold a candle. He paints it and inserts the mirror, which he secures with two-part epoxy adhesive.
Design coordinator Spencer Anderson hangs custom silk draperies (figure D) behind the bed to camouflage the closets and up the bed's new dramatic appeal in the space. He uses low-profile hospital-style tracks to make the draperies easy to move back and forth when needed. A decorative round mirror (figure E) is hung over the bed in front of the drapes to reflect sparkle from the fireplace.
Contemporary bed linens and lamps (figure F), along with a creamy beige area rug, accent the room's new classic style. Formal drapes in a creamy-tone flank the fireplace for instant class, and a new bed bench (figure G) provides a spot for enjoying the fire.
