Hotel Suite Bedroom
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1308 -- More Projects »
Andrea Duran and Brandon Patin recently began living together in Brandon's condominium. The rest of the house is reminiscent of a glamorous Las Vegas nightclub, but the bedroom doesn't reflect both of their tastes. The Design on a Dime team signs on to create a space that will suit both of them.
The Dilemma
The focal point of the space is the espresso-finish leather bed, which is dressed in red bed linens. Other than a small pile of her belongings next to a wall, you'd never know Andrea lived in the condo. The space is cluttered and lacks a style direction.

Before: The bachelor space needed stylish details with a feminine touch.
|
After: Soft tones and rich textures add style for both tastes.

The Solution
Host Lee Snijders along with design coordinators Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge, design a space to suit both Andrea and Brandon. Sleek silver bedding and new window treatments will define the style direction in the space. New shelving units and storage bins will control the clutter. A privacy curtain will camouflage the door to the bathroom. New lighting and accessories will further soften the look in the space. Here's how the team puts it all together.
A coat of pearlized-white paint gives the space a luxurious ambiance.Charles Burbridge refinishes an existing mirror (figure A) by giving it a faux-metal treatment. First he gives the frame a coat of silver paint, then applies a two-part resin. Once dry, the resin will give the piece the look of enamel or even inlaid metal.
Lee Snijders designs candleholders (figure B) to give the space a romantic feel. He cuts a 1-by-4 piece of wood into individual squares. Then he glues each square to the next to create a solid block of wood. He creates a candle spike by hammering a nail into the top and clips off the head. He then stains the whole thing a rich brown color to match the pieces in the room.
Summer Baltzer dresses the windows and the entrance to the bathroom using rich silk material. She designs the drapery at the bathroom door (figure C) so it can pocket to one side when left open without getting in the way. The cornice at the top of the doorway is extended 10 inches to the right to provide pocketing space. A matching cornice at the window (figure D) further complements the dramatic look of the new space.
The armoire is moved to a wall of its own to lighten the look of the wall opposite the bed (figure E). New shelves flank either side of the TV, holding matching silver storage boxes (figure F) to keep clutter at a minimum.
Lee designs custom wall art (figure G) for above the headboard of the bed. He builds shallow boxes and then paints the exterior with rich brown stain and contemporary silver. He mounts pictures of the couple, their friends and family in frames on the piece. The result is a contemporary accent that ties the whole room together.
Charles designs luxurious bedding for the couple using rich silver satin to make shams and a pearly cream fabric for the duvet. He trims the edges in cream-colored faux fur. Snaps at the top of the duvet hold the insert in place.
