Host Joan Steffend and designer Susie Burke bring some 21st-century style into a bedroom from the 1980s for less than $500.
Wall Paint $61
Two shades of gray are used to give the room a neutral, two-tone palette. The built-in cabinets are painted the same dark gray as the surrounding wall so they will blend into the room.

Television Box $56
The unused, freestanding fireplace is transformed into a TV cabinet. A box is built to replace the fireplace insert and to house the television. The box is secured to a lazy Susan so the homeowners will be able to view the TV from anywhere in the room.

Bathtub Cover Platform $127
Since the homeowners don't use the bathtub it is converted into a lounge seating area. A large piece of plywood is covered with three-inch foam. An old comforter is laid on top of the foam, then microfiber fabric, which will serve as the cover, is laid on top of the comforter. Using at least two people, the comforter and microfiber are pulled tight in all directions, then fastened underneath with staples.

Window Treatment $77
Several yards of fiberglass screen fabric is purchased at a home improvement store. The fabric is very pliable so it is easily hemmed on all sides. Curtain hooks are added to the top of the fabric then hung on a new curtain rod. The fiberglass screen material functions as a sheer curtain, adding just a hint of privacy.

Bedding $100
The homeowner's bed is repositioned under the window. A new comforter is added for a more tailored look. Two geometric patterned pillows lend some high impact color to the bed.
