Green Bedroom Makeover

Painting bands of green in a bedroom creates a soothing retreat.

Before: This bland bedroom has almost nothing of interest in it with its white walls and black furniture. Even the gray bedding is boring.

After: Bands of refreshing green turn these stark white walls into showstoppers for very little money while a zebra-print rug grounds the entire design. New green bedding with punches of black and white softens the striped walls.

Before: This side of the room continues the very basic color scheme of black and white. Even the great window seat blends right into the walls so it's easily missed.

After: Removing the dresser mirror opens the room up and makes way for large silk floral arrangements. Fun pillows lend color and comfort to the window seat, which now stands out as a built-in element.
Designer Alysa Weinstein makes over a bland bedroom using "wasabi" as her inspiration. Green is a great color for a bedroom because it's refreshing and natural. The human eye sees more shades of green than any other color so Weinstein plays with that in this boring space by painting very bold stripes in different greens, which is an affordable alternative to wallpaper that's also fun and easy.

Horizontal Stripe Painting Tips:

  • After measuring the walls, use a long level and pencil to mark the bottom of the top stripe.
  • Start by applying the top color first, and then work down the wall.
  • Once the first band of color is dry, measure/mark the next stripe and use a low-adhesion painter's tape just above the pencil mark along the top of the next stripe to avoid peeling the paint off when dry.
  • In order to prevent dripping between the stripes, always paint a little below the bottom of each. That way, you can paint over that color when it's dry.
