Romantic Master Bedroom Makeover

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-809 -- More Projects »

Before: Teal Walls and a Sun and Moon Bedspread
As a rock musician, Cliff Calabro often takes his music on the road, and when he comes home he would like a cozy and comfortable bedroom to share with his wife, Vanessa. After the birth of their son, Justice, the Calabros moved into a new home where they outfitted the house with their eclectic style. However, they ran out of steam when it came to designing the master bedroom. The teal walls don't suit them and the sun and moon bedspread certainly doesn't coordinate with their beautiful mahogany furniture set.

After: Romantic Retreat
Lee Snijders, Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge put their creative skills to work for the Calabros' master bedroom. They decide to inject the room with some romance using luxurious fabrics and warm colors. Burbridge covers up the wall color with a faux finish, Baltzer creates a window treatment that unifies the large architectural windows and Snijders takes on the challenge of finding the perfect furniture arrangement. Read below for more design details and to find out how they fared on the $1,000 budget.

Lighting - $318

  • The dated ceiling fan is replaced with a fan sporting an updated look with leather detail and elegant shades.

  • Snijders enhances two store-bought lamps with wood appliqués and gold and silver paint. He tapes off part of the lamp and lightly sprays the exposed areas with the silver paint then dabs over it with the gold. The appliqués are painted with the same technique and glued onto the sides of the lamp base. (lamp: Lowe's - wood grain / 212869; fan: Lowe's - Brockton, Brass / 48423)

    • Baltzer creates curtains that frame out the expansive windows. She stitches together a valance to span the top and two panels for either side of the windows. Since this treatment is purely decorative, she staples both the valance and panels to thin wood strips, which are secured to the wall with wood screws. • Snijders builds a planter box to sit on the window ledge behind the dresser. It's filled with high-quality silk greenery to add a nice focal point in front of the window.

    Paint and Supplies - $105

    • Burbridge gives the walls a two-color paint finish with a honey beige color base coat and an olive green and wallpaper paste mixture as the top coat. To create the mottled look, he rolls on the top coat and applies a plastic sheet. He presses the sheet onto the wall to create creases and rolls over it with a clean paint roller to press it in even further. The plastic sheet is then removed to reveal some of the honey beige base coat. Tip: When doing this technique, it's important to work in small sections so that the top coat doesn't have a chance to dry out before applying the plastic sheet. Furniture - $50

    • Burbridge purchases a rocking chair from an online seller.

    Project Total - $995
