Before: Lifeless Guest Room
Todd and Kristy Best have a guest room that's in need of some designer TLC. They're interested in giving the room a travel theme, something that looks completely different from the rest of their house. They also want to be able to easily convert the room into a nursery in the future. The main issues in the room are the lack of color and organization, the window that looks out onto a public walkway and the mirrored closet doors. They're hoping Kristan Cunningham, Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson can work some magic to make their room beautiful.

After: Coastal Theme
A dusty blue wall color starts the seaside look the design team is going for. Among the many improvements are an update to the existing bed, new furniture and a stylish fix for the window. Cunningham creates a custom shell chandelier, Sheinkopf enhances a store-bought table and Anderson tackles the closet doors. Read on for more details on the design.

  • Sheinkopf shops for pine bookcases and finds them at an unfinished furniture store, along with a storage trunk. They're all painted white to add a crisp look to the fresh design. He finds an end table at a different store and enhances the legs with a rope detail at right. He screws and glues 1/4-inch rope to the legs and winds it up using the indentations as spacers. • Since the Bests may want to change the room layout when it's turned into a nursery, Cunningham disguises the headboard and footboard with particleboard and fabric to make it look like a daybed when it's placed against the wall. She sandwiches both the head- and footboard between 1/2-inch particleboard and fills in the gaps with foam. Batting is placed over each and stitched along the sides to give it a more structured, squared-off look. The two fabric slipcovers are outfitted with elastic bands at the bottom for easy removal. Additionally, she creates a bed skirt that's attached with hook-and-loop tape.

  • The bed is dressed with white linens, a blue blanket and a tan faux suede duvet. (duvet cover: Kohl's - Taupe 085989405961; throw for bed: Target - 067100088)
