Contemporary Guest Room
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-409 -- More Projects »
Silas Myers needs help with his guest room, which is currently a catchall space for furniture odds and ends. He wants a contemporary look that'll blend in with the spare style seen in the rest of his home.
The DilemmaHost Kristan Cunningham meets up with Myers to discuss his design dilemma. Besides all the unwanted furniture, the other issues are the lack of a focal point, absence of color and the frilly window treatments that will definitely be replaced. She then talks it over with the design coordinators, Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson. They decide on the color scheme and divide up the projects that will bring the look together.
The SolutionThe guest room goes from chaotic to clean-lined in just one day--here's how the design team pulls it off:
- The walls are painted in two tones of green divided by a chocolate-colored chair rail. The top part is painted a subtle chartreuse and the dark portion is painted a deep olive. The chair rail is made of 1/4-inch medium-density fiberboard (mdf).
Anderson constructs an industrial-style upholstered headboard featuring a metal grid design. He cuts mdf to size and lays square pillows out in a grid, attaching them to the board with staples. The pillows are then covered with chocolate-colored fabric, which is stapled to the back. The metal grid is created using aluminum strips secured with carriage bolts.
Cunningham makes an artistic statement with paint and a floating shelf. She paints an oxblood red circle on an awkward wall, attaches a floating shelf and accessorizes it with a potted orchid.
Two new floating side tables provide just the right amount of space for a clock and a few accessories. Small sconces bring in ambiant lighting.
