Converted Carriage House

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1213 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn tours the unusual master suite Lin Coughlin created on the top two floors of her converted 19th-century carriage house. The third floor is dedicated to the sleeping space and a small bath, while the office and a larger bath are located on the second floor at the bottom of a stairwell embellished with an arts-and-crafts banister. Designer Jean Courtney helped accommodate the unusual angles in the bedroom created by the multiple dormers and turret.

A small crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling in the turret, which is painted to resemble the night sky.
  • Whimsical additions to the carriage house over the years created interesting and charming angles and corners in the home’s interior.
  • All the furniture in the bedroom is a warm cherry that matches the flooring. Different lines of furniture were used for the suite in order to accommodate the unusual spaces created by the ceiling’s angles. They are united by their warm cherry finish.
  • The small turret on the third floor is outfitted with bookshelves and a comfortable chair for a cozy reading nook.
  • Unusual paint finishes are used throughout the bedroom. The tops of fir trees are painted around the base of the room, giving the feel of a tree-top space. The yellow walls fade to white as they rise, to imitate the look of bright natural light coming in from up high. The turret ceiling is painted with clouds and a blue sky for a whimsical touch.
  • The walls of the second-story bath are covered with beadboard and toile wallpaper. Unusual designs with the green and white ceramic tiles combine with a leafy border tile to create a visually interesting space.
