Master Getaway Suite

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1212 -- More Projects »
Kim and Scott David were overwhelmed by the huge size of the master suite in their traditional home, so they took the space down to its studs and reapportioned it, creating intimate, smaller spaces for the bed, bath, sitting and dressing areas. Designer Dorothy Janes used deep colors, traditional detailing and rich materials to create this comfortable and charming retreat.

A deep green wall color was chosen for the master bedroom to avoid too feminine a look. It is softened with jewel-toned textiles in a swirling print.

A half wall, which contains storage with roll-out drawers, has columns and arches that create architectural interest and delineate the dressing area.

Open shelving and comfortable seating turn an alcove into a cozy reading nook.

The laundry room uses colorful tiles and a vessel sink to create texture and visual interest.
  • A tray ceiling painted white contrasts with the deep green walls and adds character to the sleeping space. Jewel tones in a floral pattern were used for textiles to soften the masculine feel of the dark walls.
  • Dark mahogany furniture stands up to the deep green of the walls. To accommodate the grand size of the room, large furniture pieces were used, from the king-size traditional bed to marble-topped chests of drawers used as nightstands.
  • French doors lead to the bath from the bedroom. Marble-topped his-and-her French vanities flank the door.
  • A laundry room is located at one end of the bath, and a large walk-in-closet at the other.
  • A border from the rectangular mosaic carpet in the center of the bath was repeated in a mosaic tile border above the vanities and around the tub. It adds interest without complicating the look.
  • The two vanities--with pullout drawers, green marble tops and shiny chrome fixtures--look like dressers.
  • The shower has a tumbled mosaic quartz floor, large format tiles for the surround, limestone surrounded by the same tiles used for the wall on the ceiling, and a seamless glass enclosure.
  • The tub is adjacent to the shower, and the end of the tub surround extends into the shower, creating a bench.
