Shades of White

Smart Design : Episode SDN-105 -- More Projects »
White-on-white decorating is tranquil and beautiful to some, bland and even sterile to others--but it doesn't have to be that way. There is a way to dress your house in white.

It's just a matter of dispelling a few myths:

Myth #1: White is boring and bland. The best of all-white decorating incorporates many different hues since there's an entire variation to white. Some whites have more beige in them, so they give off a warmer glow. Put the varied pieces in the same room and the lines of each object are clearly defined--nothing is washed out.

Myth # 2: White is flat with no personality. Decorating with white means using lots of textures such as a smooth surface next to a rough one. In an all-white room, texture adds the color to the picture.

Some of the best textures to use in a white room come from Mother Nature--clay pots, light woods, seashells, stones, rocks or pebbles or much larger pieces like the gray and white carrera marble that tops this bar (figure B). These elements add interest and grace without overpowering a white room.

On those days when you would like a splash of color in an-all white space, Mother Nature can help there as well--with flowers. Or bring in a colorful pillow and throw.

Myth #3: White is hard to keep clean. If you see an all-white room and suddenly have visions of fingerprints dancing in your head, you're not alone. However, furniture manufacturers are more tuned-in to how we want to live today and are producing many white pieces with durable, easy-to-wash slipcovers.

White tables, chairs, lamps and vases need to be dusted just like any other furnishings but they show the dust less than pieces with color or dark wood.

Tips:

  • If you're thinking about an all-white environment, start small. Experts say living with white is an adjustment and a change that should be made one step at a time. To bring white-on-white into your home, do one room and see how you like it.

  • Flea markets are a great source for finding accent pieces for an all-white room or home. Look for different styles and hues, which will make it easy to create interest and texture plus you'll probably save a little money at the same time.
  • Create a tableau by filling a white bookcase with favorite glassware and white items for an uncluttered look (figure C).
