Master craftsman Tim Colleran joins host Joan Steffend and designer Nan Sloan to explain the basics involved in the construction of the loft featured in the sports theme bedroom makeover.

  • The loft is built from pine--this inexpensive yet durable wood is a good, practical choice for any bedroom.
  • A piece of plywood cut to a size slightly larger than the mattress forms the platform of the loft. It is reinforced on the underside with 1x6s spaced about every 18" along its length.
  • The frame of the loft platform is also constructed with 1x6s, and the each of the four legs is built from two 1x4s bolted together to form a 90-degree angle. Once the legs are assembled and the framed platform is complete, the legs are simply fitted over each corner of the frame (so the upper edge is flush with the top of the frame) and bolted in place.
