Elegant Blue Bedroom Sensible Chic : Episode SEC-608 -- More Projects »
Host Brook Channon introduces designer Matthew Leverone, who created a stunning blue bedroom using original contemporary artwork costing more than $200,000, expensive antiques and fabulous fabrics. The look combined traditional details, dark wood for a masculine feel, and clean lines in the furniture that complement the contemporary artwork for a serene, elegant retreat.Transforming the Makeover Room Designer Stuart Piontek guided the transformation of a boring, dated bedroom lacking a cohesive style into a contemporary room with colorful artwork and an interesting color palette. Here's how:
- Painted the walls light blue (Benjamin Moore - Nimbus Gray 2131-50).
- Hung silky slate blue, shadow-striped curtains with a copper-colored hem at the bottom.
- Used gold-colored linens on the bed.
- Made a tall plywood headboard covered with a velvety fabric in a copper color.
- Dressed the bed in a coverlet made from the same fabric used for the curtains, banding it with the same copper-colored fabric. A copper-colored beaded accent pillow, set in front of a sham that matches the coverlet, finishes the look.
Placed a dark wood round table on one side of the bed and accessorized it with books, decorative stones in a glass vase, and a tall contemporary brushed-chrome lamp with a black shade.
Hung a large horizontal piece of contemporary artwork on the side of the bed that incorporated the light blue of the walls, slate blue of curtains and coverlet, and the copper accent color of the headboard. Used a sleek-lined narrow black table for a desk and added a rustic stool with a log-shaped seat on the other side of the bed.
Used a contemporary geometric unframed poster for the artwork over the desk and framed it with a pewter frame. Accessorized the desk with a short white contemporary lamp, books and traditional sconces laid flat. The Bottom Line To see where the savings are, take a look at this direct cost comparison of some Inspiration Room items and the creatively comparable ones used in the Makeover Room: Custom silk bedding, $7,000 / Striped coverlet and bedding, $390 (coverlet and sham fabric found at discount fabric store) Desk, bench and accessories, $13,800 / Black desk, rustic bench, poster, $220 poster of Rodin's "Cambodian Dancers," short sofa table, lamp - IKEA round side table - Bombay Company obelisk-shaped brushed chrome lamp with black shade, large glass vase - Target silver plate bowl with rope rim - Bed, Bath & Beyond taupe accent pillow with gold scroll design and fringe detail - Ross gold corbels - Marshalls Kandinsky print - Cost Plus
