Luxurious Spa Bathroom

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1612 -- More Projects »
New parents Tran Tran and Dejim Juang are longing for a place to escape and feel that their large master bathroom would be the perfect place for a hot tub once it's updated. The Design on a Dime team sets out to create a soothing, spa-like retreat for the young couple on a budget of $1,000.

Before: White walls and lack of detail left this spacious bathroom feeling empty.

After: Lush green walls and luxurious accents transform the space.
The Dilemma
The spacious bathroom is colorless with white walls, white fixture and a white floor. They want the space to be a relaxing retreat they can unwind in at the end of the day.

The Solution
A soothing spa-green backdrop will set a serene tone. Columns will add architectural impact, and sophisticated storage solutions will hide unsightly toiletries. The cabinets will get updated appeal and accessories such as candles, and luxurious towels will create a relaxing ambiance. Here's how the team brings the plan to life.

The vanity gets a sophisticated makeover, starting with the mirror. Interior designer Brice Cooper adds custom detail with a frosted band (figure A) around the mirror's edge, using an acid-etching kit (available at most craft-supply stores).

Architectural molding, painted white, is added to the mirror to create a cohesive look with the cabinets below (figure B), which have also been given new detail. The doors each get a panel of wainscoting framed with molding, and new, brushed-chrome knobs add a chic final touch.

The tub area is given architectural emphasis, with new columns flanking each side of the tub. Custom-made, flower-motif artwork between them echoes the serene-green wall color.

Storage was scarce throughout the space, so the team places a cabinet over the toilet to supplement the couple's existing one. Storage tins are added to keep toiletries out of sight until needed. The crisp-white pieces complement the added architectural details throughout.

Design coordinator Kelly Edwards creates a space divider to better conceal the toilet area. The divider is made using a panel from a storage cabinet, and the frosted inset is actually an acrylic insert used in fluorescent light fixtures.

Brice gave the glass shower door the same acid-etching treatment used on the vanity mirror. The mock-tile pattern allows the couple to leave daily-use items within easy reach without them being in plain view.

Plush towels, a soft-green rug and stylish chrome vanity accessories complete the bathroom's spa transformation.
