Watch the Video: A variety of decorative trim pieces become a wooden soffit to highlight an octagonal ceiling.
Materials:

1x12 oak lumber
decorative oak trim
bead molding
router table with ogee and "V" bits
nail gun
table saw
wood putty
compound miter saw
stain

Steps:

1. Use an ogee bit to soften one long edge of the 1x12 pieces.
2. Use a "V" bit to add two V-shaped grooves just above the softened edge to add more detail. Cut the 1x12s and decorative trim pieces to length using a compound miter saw and stain them as desired. Let dry.
3. Attach the 1x12s, decorative edge down, to the wall using a nail gun. Hold the next layer of trim in place where desired and nail it to the 1x12s. Repeat with the next trim piece to achieve the layered look.
4. Secure cap molding along the top of the boards to complete the project.
5. Fill nail holes with matching wood putty and let dry.
