Asian-Style Master Suite

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1005 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn tours the contemporary home of Cindy Brooks, who worked with designer Fu-Tung Cheng to create a serene Asian look in the master suite. The circular suite of rooms is defined by the careful use of color and materials, windows designed to take full advantage of spectacular views of mountains and the bay, and a bathroom that uses natural materials to delineate function.

Custom-design stainless-steel sinks and floating cabinetry have a sleek, pared-down look .
  • The entire second floor consists of the master suite, which is a circular layout of spaces that includes the bedroom, an office and second seating area, walk-in closet and long, narrow bath.
  • The suite begins with the unusual steel staircase leading to the second floor . It has thick walnut treads and a banister gently curved like an elongated airplane propeller.
  • A seamless glass corner window, something a an architectural challenge, provides an uninterrupted view of the mountains and bay and floods the bedroom with natural light.
  • Soft yellows and greens provide a soothing color palette. Minimal furniture and fabric draped walls add to the serene feel of the room.
  • Walnut flooring is used throughout the bedroom, office and closet areas.
  • Photographic maple laminate is used in the closet for cabinetry.
  • The bath is divided into zones defined by different materials: the washing zone has walnut flooring, the water closet zone and area leading to the tub is natural slate, and mosaic is used to tile the bathing area.
  • Stainless steel is used liberally in the bath: a large soaking tub is stainless , and the sinks and counter are a custom stainless design.
  • The long wall of the bath has floating cabinetry bordered by a long bench with a natural edge.
