Natural Stone in the Bath
Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1004 -- More Projects »
Marble is a classic, elegant choice in the bath, but other natural stones are becoming popular for their more casual and contemporary look. Host Joan Kohn visits stone fabricator Chris Mian and designer Sue Adams to learn about these alternatives to marble.
- The three most common natural stones used in the bath are granite, limestone and slate.
- Granite is the hardest stone and the most expensive. It produces crisp, clean lines and comes in a huge variety of colors and movement of grain within the stone .
- Limestone gives a rustic, European look. It is usually a creamy color that is susceptible to stains and scratches.
- Slate is harder than limestone, and is usually found in shades of green, from deep to medium.
- Onyx is a new choice for high end bathrooms. It is a semi-precious stone and priced accordingly.
- Price of natural stone is based on its rarity and quality.
- When buying natural stone, view the entire slab before buying, since there can be tremendous variation within the slab.
