Contemporary sinks are very clean in their design, with little or no ornamentation. Shape often dominates the look.

Pedestal sinks aren't the only take on a traditional period look. This distressed-copper sink with aged copper and brass fixtures is another approach to a period look.

Vessel sinks sit on the counter and require tall faucets. They are a wonderful option for tall people.

A wall-mount sink has no plumbing underneath it. Fixtures as well as the sink itself can be mounted into the wall.
The choices in bathroom sinks are almost limitless, with decisions to be made about materials, shapes, sizes and prices. There is something for everyone! Host Joan Kohn visits the experts, Billie and Robin Brenner, to learn about design trends and considerations when buying a bathroom sink.
  • No longer restricted to plain porcelain (the easiest material to maintain), sinks come in almost every material imaginable: copper, platinum, gold, wood, glass, mosaic and, of course, porcelain.
  • Period looks are popular again, which means a return to classic shapes.
  • Pedestal sinks are a popular period look. They can be mounted on legs or a single column. They are a good choice when space is limited or when storage and counter space are not a consideration.
  • Vanities require more space than a pedestal sink, but they provide much more storage and counter space.
  • To extend the life of any sink, avoid harsh, abrasive cleaners.
  • Before shopping for a sink, determine your design needs: proportion, space and functionality.
