Mirrors, marble and arches add Old World style to the vanity area, designed for two.

Host Joan Kohn visits the redesigned bathroom of David and Judy Heuter, empty nesters who borrowed space from an unused bedroom to create a entrance hall and generous closet space for their master bedroom. The bathroom was gutted and reconfigured to accommodate a large hot tub. They worked with Mick DeGiulio of DeGiulio Kitchen Designs to achieve an elegant yet informal Old World look.

  • The tumbled-marble shower is the centerpiece of the new bath. The acid-washed marble in warm earth colors that is both rustic and elegant. Since the marble is so porous, it was sealed several times to repel water.
  • The shower has a variety of spray options, including a hand-held shower that is used for the family pet's clean up.
  • Instead of using a whirlpool tub that has to be emptied and refilled, the Heuters chose a hot tub in white that has the look of a whirlpool. To visually minimize its height and large proportions, panels matching the cabinetry were built around it . The flooring underneath had to be reinforced to support its extra weight.
  • The hot tub is flanked buy two mirrors and arches to soften its impact.
  • To complement the warm earth tones of the tumbled marble, a veined green marble was used for the vanity counters.
