Glass as a design element might have been characterized as cold and static at one time. Kitty Bartholomew visits glass designer Jane Skeeter and discovers a new type of glass, UltraGlas, that can be shaped into textured sheets or panels with raised designs. Used for anything from tabletops to windows and shower surrounds, it can add drama and elegance to any decor.
In the "Glass House" of Lois Perlman, Skeeter has introduced UltraGlas into nearly every room.
- In the living room, the mantel, surround and hearth are made of a smoky glass textured to look like stone.
- The ledge between kitchen and living room is surfaced in the same textured glass used on the fireplace.
- In the dining room, the table is made of a nearly opaque glass that doesn't show finger prints and allows for privacy under the table if the shoes come off during dinner.
- The guest bath has a textured molded glass countertop and integral sink.
- In the kitchen, textured glass used as a backsplash that lets in light but obscures an undesirable view.
- In the master bath, the shower surround is a frameless glass enclosure with a large starburst pattern. It requires little maintenance except for wiping it down .
- The panel behind the tub has a starburst panel, too.
- The windows by the tub, which also have the starburst pattern, are insulated, so in addition to providing privacy while still letting in light, they provide thermal and noise insulation.
