Artist Elizabeth Castrejon livens up a small, unadorned bathroom with a realistic-looking painted window treatment. She prepares the surface by blotting a deglosser onto the wall, then sketches in the design in pencil. Using acrylic paints, she next outlines the design with a mixture of yellow, white and Payne's gray and lets it dry for 24 hours before filling in the details. She recommends putting a glaze over it to protect the finish. Kitty Bartholomew also suggests that you avail yourself of any of a number of books on the subject of trompe l'oeil (literally, "fool the eye").
