Figure A
Author and ribbon expert Ellie Schneider demonstrates some simple ribbon techniques and decorates a bathroom hamper with woven ribbon.

Materials:

ribbon
fusible interfacing
straight pins
soft board
wicker hamper
batting
foam core
iron
glue
staple gun

Steps:

  1. Cut strips of ribbon based on the dimensions of the top of the hamper (add a two inch seam allowance to all four sides).
  2. Place fusible interfacing on a soft board.
  3. Place strips of ribbon vertically, touching side-to-side, on top of the interfacing. Secure the ribbon at both ends with straight pins.
  4. Create a basketweave effect with more strips of ribbon (figure A).
  5. Fuse the ribbon and interfacing with a warm iron.
  6. Stitch around the outside edge of the ribbon to hold it into place.
  7. Cut a piece of foam core board and batting the size of the hamper top. Wrap batting around foam core board and secure with glue.
  8. Wrap ribbon cover around batting and secure with staples.
  9. Glue the entire piece to the top of the hamper.
