Country Sampler's Creative Director Carol Schalla shares ideas on how to turn inexpensive candles into country charmers. Striped Candle Centerpiece
Materials:
candle-painting medium (available at craft stores)
craft paint
two pieces of flat wood
flat-cut brush
3 or 4 bricks
sand
Steps:
- Mix candle-painting medium with craft paint.
- Lay down two pieces of wood and set the candle down horizontally on the wood. The wood stabilizes the candle and makes it easy to apply an even stripe.
- Using a flat-cut brush, roll the candle to paint a stripe.
- Use three or four bricks to hold the candles. Duct tape one side of each brick to close off the holes. Place the bricks end to end on the table.
- Place a candle in every other hole, then pour sand into the hole to secure the candle. Set apples or another accessory in between the candles for a country effect.

For a more informal look, use cookie cutters on each side instead of papier-mache cutouts.
