Materials:

frame with flat surface area or picture frame molding
raised wallpaper
small, thin piece of plywood
copper paint
aqua paint
paintbrushes
staple gun and staples
small brad nails and hammer
felt
glue
patina finish solution (optional)

Steps:

  1. Choose a frame in desired size for the candle tray (be sure it has a wide and flat border). Make one with picture frame molding if necessary. Paint frame brown for a base coat.
  2. Using the frame, make a template to cut the raised wallpaper. Turn the frame over on a piece of cardboard, trace around the outside and the inside opening. Use a ruler to draw a line connecting the corners to make miters.
  3. Cut out the cardboard pieces to yield a template for each side. Cut out pieces of the raised wallpaper using this guide.
  4. Glue the border pieces to the frame with white glue, matching the mitered corners together.
  5. Paint the wallpaper copper and let dry completely (reapply if desired).
  6. Dry-brush or rub aqua-colored paint in spots for a worn patina.
  7. To make the base to hold the candles, cut a thin piece of plywood 1/2 to one inch larger than the opening of the hole in frame. Cut a thin sheet of copper to the same size and staple it onto the plywood.
  8. Nail the plywood base to the back of the frame, making sure that the copper shows through the frame opening.
  9. Glue a piece of felt onto the bottom of the plywood base to protect tabletop.
  10. If desired, rub a patina finish onto the copper and add candles.
