Making Everyday Notes & Thank You Cards

You never know when you'll need a pretty notecard to send a thank you, get well, congratulatory, sympathy or other sentiment to a friend. While such notes are always welcome, they'll be even more appreciated when they come as handmade cards. Use simple materials and just a little bit of time to make these pretty cards, and keep a stash on hand so you'll always be prepared.

The wonderful thing about these cards is how quickly they were all made. There are so many fantastic products on the market that have done the work for you--all that's left for you to do are choose papers, pick your embellishments or stamp designs, and adhere all the parts together.

Stick 'Em Up

I'm always amazed at the quality and variety of "stickers" available today. I remember having a sticker collection as a child and thinking the "scratch 'n' sniff" ones had to be just about the most magical things in the world. Stickers that smell? Amazing!

Nowadays, strickers truly are so amazing that we don't even call them stickers anymore--they're embellishments. They're made of glitter and beads, fabric with real stitches, metal and wire, real dried flowers, buttons, even real seashells. Pair a simple blank notecard with one or a few of these detailed little things and 30 seconds later, voila! You're created a beautiful, unique card, just like that.

These cards were made using products from Me & My Big Ideas' just write! cardmaking line. The notecards come in neat notepads; some have windows in the front, some are solid. The purple card has a just write! sticker and rickrack, accented with a little button. For the white card, I placed the just write! sticker on a scrap square of polka-dotted paper and positioned it inside the card so it would show through the window. The "make a wish" is a threads label, also from the just write!line, adhered with double-sided tape. For the black card, layer a just write! sticker over a slightly larger piece of vellum, and adhere it all to the notecard. The "laugh" sticker is from Stampendous.

For some reason, this simple card is one of my favorites out of all the ones made for this project. It's simply light green card stock, onto which a white circular note from Impress Rubber Stamps was glued. On top of the circular note is a floral sticker from M&MBI's just write! line, and the pretty trim along the bottom is also from just write!. Extra touch: Trim the back edges of a plain envelope with scallop or other decorative scissors.

With Jolee's Boutique stickers, a piece of decorative paper and a notecard, you can create a card for just about any occasion. A tiny faux letter, bottle of ink and pen say, "I miss you, keep in touch," while pink flowers wrapped in iridescent mylar over pretty polka-dotted paper say just about anything you need them to. Extra touch: Use a smaller sticker from the Jolee's pack to decorate the envelope for cards that will be hand-delivered rather than mailed, and use the new silver Sharpie markers or metallic gel pens to write on black notecards.

All of these fun notecards were made with purse and shoe Accents from Meri Meri. They are already embellished with ribbon or yarn, so all you have to do is stick them on a pretty notecard. These are from the Rossler line from Kate's Paperie, paired with layers of decorative paper, tags accented with ribbon, or circular notes from Impress Rubber stamps. Extra touch: Use decorative scissors to make any edge more interesting.

These inspiring, colorful notes were made using "blossom," "bloom" and "inspire" Sonnets Poemstones by Sharon Soneff (Creative Imaginations), simply layered over pretty papers and circular notes from Impress Rubber Stamps. There's almost 30 Poemstones in each pack; pair them with as many brightly colored notecards and circular notes, and in just a few minutes you've got enough for at least two sets of handmade notecards to give as a gift.

If you want something more intricate, try these girlie, candy-colored notecards, made using Dena Designs, Inc. (Creative Imaginations) embellished stickers and layers of pretty Dena Designs papers or vellum tags accented with pastel dotted ribbon. These pretty stickers are three-dimensional and come already accented with pearls, fabric flowers, ribbons and glitter. They're just about the prettiest ones I've seen, and so feminine--perfect for baby showers, bridal parties or very ladylike thank-yous.

These cheerful little notes were made using small notecards in sunny orange, red and yellow. Mrs. Grossman's vellum color blocks stickers matched perfectly. Scatter the squares in all sizes in various patterns on the notes (and on the envelopes, too), and accent larger squares with orange flowers from Jolee's By You. Stamp a sweet "Thank You Kindly" (Impress Rubber Stamps) on top, if you like. Use them yourself, or make sets of six or eight similar cards to give as a gift.

Rubber Stamping & Embossing

Occasionally I get hooked on a favorite stamp and it shows up in all my work. This dandelion stamp from Impress Rubber Stamps is my current favorite! I couldn't wait to stamp it and then use glitter to make it look like someone had just blown the little seeds into the wind. Whether you sprinkle embossing glitter right onto the damp ink, or tap the dried impression with a Zig Emboss Writer pen or sailor glue pen and then add the glitter, the effect is delightful. On the left is a mahogany "Anna" card from Jolee's By You, mismatched with a pink envelope from the same line. (Pink or baby blue and chocolate brown are fun combos to try.) On the right, a square of vellum layered over a black Rossler square note with silver envelope from Kate's Paperie adds a bit more sparkle. And what do you do when you blow on a dandelion? "Wish" metal phrases are from Making Memories, adhered with their metal glue--it really works.

When embossing larger and less intricate designs, experiment with placing different colors in different areas on the stamped impression. Use a slow-drying embossing ink to give yourself a little bit more time, and have the colors you want to use ready so that you can sprinkle them right after you stamp. Using Stampendous' PEARLustre embossing powders, I sprinkled garnet over the flowery areas and emerald over the leafy areas. (Note: Unless you tap off the excess powder in between colors, it all mixes together and you can't return it to the container for reuse, so sprinkle sparingly, like adding a pinch of salt from between your fingers. Or, keep all the mixed-up powders together and use them to embellish stamps where a particular color isn't so important, like the Autumn Card, below.)
PHOTO
There are so many special details in this card, no one would ever guess how simple and quick it was! The "Autumn" label at the bottom is a ready-made sticker from Jolee's Boutique, simply applied to a large square tan notecard. Above that, the button, ribbon and vellum over torn paper are all one self-adhesive Doo-Dad embellishment from Colorbok. I simply stamped a leaf onto the vellum and heat-embossed it with a variety of Stampendous' PEARLustre embossing powders in fall colors. I love mixing the powders to give the leaves more realistic coloring, like true autumn leaves.

Elegant shapes like these Anna Griffin crown (All Night Media #580C01) and medallion (All Night Media # 580E01) stamps make perfect designs for personal stationery and notecard sets. The crown was stamped with Stewart Superior harvest gold Inkredible! embossing ink (the best I've found for getting all the details out of stamps) and heat-embossed with gold PEARLustre embossing powder from Stampendous--all one top of a pinstripe white Rossler square note from Kate's Paperie.
PHOTO
The medallion notes are simply stamped directly onto the notecard or onto vellum, which was layered over silver paper on the black card, and accented with photo corners from Making Memories. Both medallions were heat-embossed with Stampendous' PEARLustre embossing powders. Make 8 or 10 of these alike, tie them up with ribbon or slip them in a pretty box wrapped in tissue, and you have a wonderful handmade gift in just a few minutes. If you use black notecards, also give a metallic gel pen or one of the new silver Sharpie markers to write inside.
A Touch of Metal

Metal letters, words, phrases and quotes from Making Memories are a unique way to add the sentiment inside a card or the greeting/wish to the front.

Here's my favorite dandelion stamp (Impress Rubber Stamps), embossed with glitter and layered on gingham and black paper, all on top of a black notecard. This card becomes even more special when you open it to find a Making Memories eyelet quote inside: "Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you will look back and realize they were the big things." Note: Use the new silver Sharpie markers or gel pens to write on black notecards.

I have a passion for chairs--I use them as side tables and even just decorative pieces all over my house, so these felt chair stickers with pretty little metal legs from Jolee's By You caught my attention right away. There's no telling what their creator had in mind for them, but I love them on simple khaki notecards, maybe layered with scallop-edged red vellum. Inside, eyelet quotes from Making Memories make these whimsical cards even more fun. Invite a friend over for girls' night with, "Time is the most valuable thing one can spend"; thank a gracious hostess with, "We do not remember days, we remember moments."

Here's the dandelion stamp (Impress Rubber Stamps) again, this time stamped on a square of blue paper, then adhered onto a silvery blue notecard. To give the card a message and keep the metallic theme going, attach a metal word from Making Memories with their metal glue. Now you have a simple, inspiring card to send for sympathy or encouragement.

Pink and gray are a classic pair; dress them up by using silver instead of gray. Stamp the harlequin background from Impress Rubber Stamps using platinum planet Tsukineko Brilliance ink on a pink "Anna" notecard from Jolee's By You. Then layer metallic label and "Thank You" stickers from Stampendous on the front for an anything-but-everyday thank you note.
