Mississippi Coppersmith Bill Shook As a Jackson, Mississippi, afternoon turns its quiet thoughts to twilight, a Southern tradition softly awakens. Bill Shook's copper lanterns paint lively flames against a fading sky. In the show, he crafts a traditional light called a yoke lantern that will illuminate a brick archway and courtyard.
Once the copper frame of the lantern is created, Shook creates the yoke that will serve as its gas line and its decorative hanger. Made with two steel pipes, he bends the steel together to create a mirror image. Next he braises the two pipes to two pipefittings and welds the entire lamp and yoke together.
Florida Trompe L'oeil Painter Skip Dyrda
Skip Dyrda is a master painter of trompe l'oeil, which is French for "to fool the eye." His style of painting is so real that people actually reach out to pick up the items in his work. In the show, we see Dyrda's imagination wander as he paints a lost frog onto the floor of his home studio.
California Woodworking Couple Joanne and Ricardo Vasquez
Joanne and Ricardo Vasquez met on a dock over 18 years ago. They've been a couple and working partners ever since, creating contemporary furniture that imparts a modern mood with cutting edge designs. In the show, they craft a dining room chair--one of 12 destined for a spacious San Diego home.
