Materials:

photographs to copy or scan
color photocopies or computer scans
sheet of plastic*
scissors
ruler
tape

*to make 1-3/4" or 2" square template

Steps:

1. Photocopy photos (or scan and print with a computer). Use lightweight paper for easier folding.

2. Cut 1-3/4- or 2-inch squares out of plastic for a cutting template.

3. Center template on picture, make several pencil marks on template at appropriate areas of picture so you can place pieces in the exact same position on the next piece of paper. It is possible to use only four photocopies.

4. Cut four squares of the face from the four centerfolds (figure A).

5. Cut four more squares from another area for the back four folds.

6. When folding a picture diamond, fold four different squares. Each square will show a quarter section of the center of the picture; you will have a pointed end with a different portion of the picture. Choose which pointed end you prefer for the background squares, and make four identical squares.

7. Using four picture squares, place one diamond on a small piece of transparent tape. Continue adding the diamonds to complete the picture.

8. Tape remaining diamonds together and add tape under the picture diamonds, rotating to fill the spaces between pointed ends. Note: When folding the four picture diamonds, fold four squares up to step 3. You can then see how to proceed with step 4 to obtain different quarters of the picture. The square is rotated a quarter turn with each fold (figure B).

9. Make eight diamonds. See diagram in figure C for folding instructions.

10. With the pattern side up, fold the square side to side in both directions (figure D).

11. Turn pattern down and fold at an angle in both directions (figure E).

12. Pinch the outside tips of the triangle base and push to center (figure F). Fold with two points at each end of triangle base.

13. Place the triangle flat with the base toward you. Fold the top right point over to the left, making three points to left. Fold right point down to center. Fold left point up to center (figure G).

14. Fold the triangle just formed to the right (figure H).

15. Fold the upper left point to the right (figure I).

16. Fold left point down to center. Fold top right point up to center (figure J).

17. Fold the triangle just formed to the left (figure K).

18. Place four pieces in a square (figure L).

19. Arrange four more pieces on top of the first square (figure M).
