Project by Michelle Newman.
Materials:
white silk scarf
large bag of yellow onion skins
Plaid Folkart paint: sequin black, licorice, gunmetal gray
assorted beads, tassels, trims
3 onions (small, medium, large)
toothpicks
slotted spoon
padded surface or ironing board
washer & dryer
small foam paint roller
Steps:
1. Pre-wash scarf in washing machine on delicate cycle.
2. Make a natural dye by filling a big soup pot with water and bring to a rolling boil. Add one large bag of onion skins (figure A) to pot and let it boil for 30 to 45 minutes (figure B).
3. Skim off onion skins with a slotted spoon. Add scarf to boiling dye; lower heat and let simmer for 30 to 60 minutes (figure C).
4. Remove scarf from dye pot and let cool to room temperature.
5. Wash in machine on delicate cycle with mild detergent. Dry until damp; remove and press.
6. Pin scarf to a padded surface or your ironing board to print.
7. Cut onions in half and stabilize with toothpicks (figure D). Remove center core from onion and use both parts to print with.
8. Blot onion on paper towel before printing. Apply paint with roller applicator (figure E) and print onion in a pattern on scarf (figure F).
9. Once complete, let dry overnight.
10. Heat set by either pressing or tossing into your clothes dryer for 30 to 45 minutes on high.
11. Embellish lavishly with beads, tassels, and decorative trims (figure G).
