#7300 Loew-Cornell flat brushes #4 & #12
#3650 Loew-Cornell liner brush #1
wax-coated or utility palette
brush basin
FolkArt blending gel medium
FolkArt glazing medium
tracing paper
#2 pencil
sandpaper
tack rag
water-based varnish
a few cookie cutters
Steps:
1. Sand the birdhouse if needed and wipe with the tack rag.
2. Apply blending gel to one side of the house using a #12 flat brush.
3. Double-load the #4 flat brush with the blending gel and burnt umber. Blend on a palette to soften color. Float the color onto both corners of the side of the house. Work the burnt umber into the blending gel to create a soft, blended look.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all corners of the house have been painted. Let dry.
5. Make a stain by mixing four parts glazing medium to one part burnt umber. Stain the roof, the roof edges, the top of the base, and the base edges (figure A). If necessary, wipe off excess stain to achieve desired effect and let dry.
6. Center a cookie cutter on each side and trace around it with a pencil (figure B). NOTE: If your cookie cutters are too large, simply trace around them on paper and reduce it on a copy machine. Then cut out the reduced design and trace around it.
7. Apply blending gel to the inside of the cookie cutter design.
8. Double load the #4 flat brush with blending get and burnt umber. Blend on the palette to soften color. Float the color around the inside edge of the shape. Gently blend the color toward the center of the shape and let dry (figure C).
9. To paint the candy cane roof and base edges: Basecoat the areas with two coats of wicker white. Let dry between coats.
10. Paint diagonal stripes with red light. Let dry. A second coat may be needed to cover (figure D). Let dry.
11. Double-load the small flat brush with blending gel and Paynes gray. Blend on the palette to soften color. Float shadows along the base of the candy canes. Let dry.
12. Using a #1 liner brush and thin wicker white, paint a fine horizontal line down the middle of the candy cane. Let dry.
13. Paint the bird perch with two coats of red light. Let dry.
14. For the trim: Use the white pearl dimensional paint to make the zigzag lines. Trim the roof, the corners, under the roofline on the front and back, the base edges and roof edges with the dimensional paint. Let dry.
15. Place a white pearl dot between each zigzag. Let dry.
16. Use the white pearl dimensional paint to outline the cookie cutter shapes. Let dry.
17. Use all colors of the dimensional paint and randomly apply dots of the different colors to each cookie and to the roof (figure E). Let dry.
18. When everything is dry, apply two or more coats of water-based varnish. Let dry.
19. Tie a red bow around the bird perch.
