Pop up box
Materials:
8-1/2" x 11" sheet of card stock
pencil
ruler
craft knife
double-stick tape
Steps:
1. Draw a horizontal line 1 inch up from the bottom of your sheet of paper. Measure up from that 2-1/2 inches and draw anther horizontal line; then another 2-1/2 inches up, and another 2-1/2 inches up. That should leave 2-1/2 inches to the top of the page (figure A).
2. Turn the page so the long edge is along the top and draw horizontal lines that will now intersect at a perpendicular angle. Starting at the bottom of the page, measure up 1-1/4 inch and draw the first horizontal line. From the top, measure down 1-1/4 inch and draw a horizontal; from that line, measure down another 1-1/4 inch and draw a line. Finally, measure another 1-1/4 inch down and draw a third horizontal line (figure B).
3. Mark the four folding lines as dotted lines with a pencil (figure C).
4. Fold all lines (figure D). Leave folded and cut out angled dotted lines using a craft knife.
5. With the cut angled line as your guide, cut to create a triangle through all layers. Pre-drawn lines will be your guide here (figure E).
6. Cut side flaps. Fold and tape to hold (figure F).
Decorating the box
Materials:
1/4" Red Line double-stick tape
Mary Pop-Ins box forms or fold your own with instructions below
leaping reindeer rubber stamp
star rubber stamp
PVA glue
1 yard of 2" blue velvet ribbon (per box)
iron
mister bottle of water
stamp pads in two shades of blue and silver
Steps:
Note: For all steps, place the die-cut box flat with the long straight edge on your left. The two small tabs will be at the bottom edge closest to you.
1. Stamp the box before folding it together. Use two different blue ink pads and even a touch of silver to stamp the reindeer repeatedly on all the four biggest box panels (figure G).
2. Emboss the velvet ribbon (figure H). Lightly mist the ribbon with water. Lay the star stamp facing up on a work surface. Place the ribbon, right side down, against the stamp. Steadily place the hot iron (on cotton setting and no steam) on the ribbon and hold it steady for about 20 seconds. It is best to use an inexpensive iron with steam holes only around the edges.
3. Flip the entire piece over and, using PVA glue, attach the embossed ribbon to the flaps (figure I) that would be on the right of the box if you have it laid out as suggested above. You will be gluing the ribbon to the opposite side of the box that has been previously stamped.
4. Fold all the scored lines with the exception of the two tabs that will be the box bottom. They never need to be folded. Make sure all the folds have been done well to ensure a nice finished piece.
5. Fold the long horizontal edge down, with it at your left, and then put double-stick tape on the underside of the small tab that extends out at the bottom edge closest to you. Also put a piece of double-stick tape on the under side of the other tab that runs along the bottom edge closest to you.
6. Fold the four sides of the box together. Make sure the top edge of the box is folded under when you do this. Attach the tape to the inside of the box.
7. With the bottom of the box facing up, first fold in the two panels that are not scored. Next fold in the other two panels so that the flaps hook under each other. These panels may be taped shut if you like. If they are not taped, the box will fold flat again for storage.
8. Fold down the top of the box.
9. Place a wonderful gift inside, perhaps wrapped in a coordinating tissue paper.
