Project by Lynne Farris for the Fabric Club.
Materials:
fleece scraps in a variety of pastels
small pieces muslin for rattle sack
small plastic baby rattle inserts
baby socks
hook-and-loop fastener
polyfiber filling
air-soluble marker
embroidery threads
Steps:
1. Draw bear head onto double thickness of fleece fabric (figure A). Draw your own by hand or trace from a coloring book or child's toys.
2. Stitch along traced line. Cut out leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance (figure B).
3. Cut a slit for turning in one layer (figure C). Turn right side out.
4. Stitch across ears.
5. Sew a small muslin sack to encase rattle; insert the rattle and stitch closed (figure D).
6. Insert rattle sack into slit in back of head. Surround with polyester fiberfill. Stitch closed.
7. Embroider eyes, nose and mouth (figure E).
8. Attach to toes of socks with a few sturdy stitches (figure F).
You can also use the same bear head to decorate a child-sized clothes hanger (figure G), or make a wrist band from fleece and hook-and-loop tape to create a wrist rattle that is sure to please both Mom and the little one (figure H).
