Figure G
Project designed by Leila Steineckert

Materials:

2" square gift box
pink, red, brown, white, black card stock
decorative paper
brown yarn
yellow ribbon
black pen
white gel pen or paint
heart punch
5/8" & 1/2" circle punch
circle cutter
cutting mat
glue gun w/glue sticks
white glue
cording/ribbon (optional)
mat board

Steps:

1. Cover a 2-inch square gift box with pink card stock that measure 2" x 8-1/2" (figure A). Add to the top of the lid a 2-inch square of pink card stock.

2. Wind yarn around the lid of the box about seven or eight times (figure B). Pull the yarn off as one unit and tie the middle of it with another piece of yarn. Cut the ends of the yarn and fluff it up. You will make 10 of these yarn units. One unit will be used for the girl's bangs, and the rest are for the boy's hair.

3. Wind the yarn about 12 times around a strip of mat board that measures 5 inches long. Tie it in the middle (figure C) and clip the ends. Fluff into a pom-pom. Make two 5-inch pom-poms for the girl's ponytails.

4. Glue five hair units on the top of the lid and glue two hair units on each side of the box for the boy. For the girl, glue two 5-inch hair units on top of the box and tie into ponytails. Glue one hair unit in the front for the girl's bangs and add a ribbon to the hair (figure D).

5. Punch out two different sizes of circles for the eyes. Two large white circles and two small circles will be needed for each face. Glue the black circles on the white circles for the eyes. Using a white pen, put a small dot on the black circle to highlight the eye. Cut small strips of black card stock for eyebrows. Draw eyelashes with a black pen, and draw a smiling mouth. Punch out a red heart to place in the middle of your smiling mouth.

6. The nose can be a triangle cut out of paper, a button or a wooden circle. Glue all parts of the face on one side of the box. Make sure the box opens from the back of the head (figure E).

7. Cut two 3-1/2-inch circles out of card stock for the bases to glue the boxes onto. Cut two 3-1/2-inch circles out of decorative paper and glue onto the circles of card stock (figure F).

8. Add a collar (boy's collar: 1-3/4" x 2-1/2", girl's collar: 3-inch circle) to each circle and a ribbon for a bow tie. Glue the boxes to these circle units (figure G).

Tips:
- You can personalize each box by putting the person's name on the back of the box or add a photo of the person.
- Use raffia instead of yarn for the hair to make a scarecrow box.
- Add cording or ribbon if you want to hang the boxes.
- Glue the box on a stick to add to a plant or to add to a table decoration.
- Use dimensional black and white paint for drawing on the face.
